East Carbon (Columbia) Coke Ovens
The old coke oven historic site should be cleaned up,
organized, and preserved as much as possible for future generations, especially
the ones in east Carbon. There’s a major liability problem looming for not only
the property owner, but the city too, with kids and generally all people
climbing on them, with a possibility of either a nasty fall or a cave-in happens
with someone standing on top of an already half decayed oven. Another problem
is the many piles of bricks and debris lying around creating an excellent
habitat for rattle snakes, black widow spiders, and other pests and vermin. These
coke ovens have a great historic value to East Carbon, along with the old
Carbon County Railway Depot, and out buildings. Just food for thought.
